DONATE HERE!After decades of knowing the chemical DCPA, sold under the brand name Dachtal, was unsafe for humans, the Environmental Protection Agency has finally banned its distribution and sale. Often used on broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and onion crops, DCPA’s effects include lifelong health problems and impaired brain development in fetuses, Missouri Independent reports.
Meanwhile, the Department of Energy has announced over $1.5 billion for a carbon sequestration fertilizer project. Said to become “the world’s first, carbon-negative ammonia production facility," the project–and possible negative consequences like pipe ruptures and water contamination–have residents of Terre Haute, IN, where the company is based, nervous. A number have moblized against it, Indiana Capital Chronicle reports.
Their concern is not unfounded, as the U.S.’s first carbon capture and storage (CCS) project has been found to violate the Safe Drinking Water Act. Run by Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) since 2017, monitoring found corrosion in one of the company’s two wells, DeSmog reports. Considering that the risks posed by such wells require them to be monitored up to 50 years after their use, violations are a serious cause for concern.
